Q: Do you have any go-to “rules” for money/finances? I wish there was a guideline we could follow to get started. I am an entrepreneur and feel a lot of anxiety around my finances but this year I am determined to get things on the right track. Where should I start? What should I do?
A: This is a great question, and the answer… is YES! I recently created Ruchi’s Rules for Money to help you develop tactical, sustainable habits to create more financial ease in your life. (Check out our Instagram series!) Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a small business owner, or simply looking for better ways to manage your money, these 11 rules were designed to help you shift your mindset, build financial confidence, and create a more abundant life.
Like I always say, money isn’t just about numbers; it’s about how we think, feel, and act when it comes to our finances. Remember, the way we manage/feel about our money can directly impact our sense of security, freedom, and overall happiness. So let’s dive in!
Rule #1: Develop a Healthy Money Mindset
How is your relationship with money? Pay attention to the thoughts and emotions that come up when you think about finances. If they lean negative, it’s time to reframe them with prosperity-driven beliefs. Try this mantra: “Every day, I trust myself more and more with money.”
Rule #2: Schedule Time to Look at Your Money
Make money check-ins a habit! Whether it’s Money Mondays or Finance Fridays, schedule a weekly date with your finances. Review your accounts, check your expenses, and track your income—no stress, no judgement, just awareness. Information is power!
Rule #3: Align Money with Purpose & Values
Take a moment to envision your dream life. What brings you the most joy? Now, check where your money is going. Are you financially supporting what truly matters to you? When your finances align with your values, you’re on the path to prosperity.
Rule #4: Express Gratitude for Your Money
Every dollar that comes in and goes out is a sign of movement and opportunity. Yes, even your bills! Shift your mindset—each payment is proof that you have resources to support your goals. Money flows where appreciation grows.
Rule #5: Save for Taxes & Emergencies
Money surprises are never fun, so plan for them! Set up dedicated accounts for taxes and unexpected expenses. Move money proactively, pay estimated taxes, and work with a CPA to stay stress-free. Your future self will thank you!
Rule #6: Focus on Profit Over Revenue
Revenue is exciting, but profit is what matters most. What stays in your pocket is what funds your freedom and future. Prioritize profitability over just increasing sales—because financial stability comes from what you keep, not just what you make.
Rule #7: Earn More Than You Spend
It sounds simple, but it’s easy to overlook. Before making an investment, ensure there’s an expected return. Audit your expenses, cancel unused subscriptions, and negotiate better rates. Small tweaks can make a big difference!
Rule #8: Hone in on Abundance
You are already abundant. Shift your focus to what you have, rather than what you lack. Resources, opportunities, and possibilities surround you—open your mind to them. A scarcity mindset serves no one, but an abundance mindset invites prosperity.
Rule #9: Practice Generosity
Giving isn’t just about money. Hold the door open, share knowledge, or buy someone a coffee. Generosity creates a ripple effect, bringing more abundance into your life. What you give comes back tenfold.
Rule #10: Make Sure to Pay Yourself
Entrepreneurs, take note—your paycheck doesn’t come last! Prioritize paying yourself regularly, even if it’s a small amount to start. When you take care of yourself financially, you create sustainability in your business and your life.
Rule #11: Trust Yourself with Money
This might be the most important rule of all. You don’t need to have all the answers, but you can trust yourself to make the right choices. Whether it’s hiring the right team or making big financial moves, self-trust is the foundation of financial success.
Here’s to your prosperity.
